The Machame Route is one of the most scenic routes on Kilimanjaro. It’s jokingly called the “Whiskey Route” because it’s a tough climb, but the success rates are higher on Machame Route than on the Marangu Route (or “Coca-Cola Route”). This route goes through a very beautiful and lush forest, although it is often very misty. Machame route has incredible views and you can see Kibo Peak, Mawenzi Peak, Shira Plateau and Mt. Meru along this route. Climbing Machame Route can be exhausting because of the numerous ups and downs but it is not technically difficult and does not require special skills.
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi you will drive to Machame Gate, which is a 40 minute to 1 hour drive from Moshi. After registration at Machame Gate you will begin your trek through the rainforest to Machame Camp. Dinner and overnight in Machame Camp.
Hiking time: approximately 6 hours
After breakfast your route continues on through a beautiful forest until you reach Shira Plateau. You will break at Shira Plateau for hot lunch surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery. After lunch you will continue to Shira Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking time: approximately 5 hours
After breakfast you will start you trek up the steep trail towards Barranco Camp. You will stop at the southwest side of Kilimanjaro for a break and hot lunch. After lunch you will resume trekking until you reach Barranco Camp for overnight and dinner.
Hiking time: Approximately 8 hours
After breakfast you will climb the great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southern slopes of Kibo, and then descend into Karanga Valley for a break and hot lunch. After lunch you continue your ascent through the alpine desert until you reach Barafu Camp for dinner. You will rest for a couple of hours before starting your climb to the summit around midnight.
Hiking time: approximately 7-8 hours
At midnight, after a cup of hot tea or coffee and snacks, you will begin your ascent to the summit. The first leg of the journey to the crater rim at Stella Point (altitude: 5752m), where there is a spectacular ice cliff and breathtaking view of Mawenzi Peak, takes approximately 6 hours. You will continue ascending and around sunrise you will reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro! After a short break to celebrate and take pictures on the roof of Africa, you will descend to Barafu Camp for breakfast, a much needed rest, and lunch. After lunch you will head to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking time: approximately 15 hours
After breakfast you will descend through the rainforest to Mweka gate. At the gate you will complete park formalities and receive your certificate. A car will be waiting to take you to your hotel in Moshi.
